Inspiration for starting a business can come from the most unexpected places. For me, it began when I was a teenager and my mom taught me to crochet. It was the kind of craft that made time slow down. I loved the way the repetitive motions became soothing, almost meditative. A few years later, when I had my own children, I took up sewing. Making simple clothes and quilts for them was more than just a hobby—it was a way to connect and create memories. Halloween was always a highlight, with my kids picking out their costume patterns and helping me bring them to life.
When I moved to the Pacific Northwest, my creativity took a new turn. I signed up for a knitting class and was hooked from day one. My first project was a hat, and soon I was knitting shawls, socks, and sweaters. I was fascinated by the way colors and patterns came together to create something unique. It felt like a whole new form of artistic expression. I also met a dear friend who has inspired the rest of this journey.
Before I knew it, I was exploring other fiber arts like weaving, spinning, and dyeing. Making my own clothes from scratch, whether through knitting, weaving, or sewing, gave me a sense of accomplishment. It was also about finding my personal style and making garments that fit just right. Along the way, I became interested in the history of textiles and the role women played in it. I was inspired by the stories of women who used textile crafts to gain independence and support themselves. My business logo reflects that inspiration, drawing from medieval paintings of women spinning yarn from a distaff.
As I got deeper into dyeing wool, I discovered a whole community of local shepherds and woolen mills. I started attending fiber festivals and fleece sales, connecting with shepherds, who are primarily women. This allows me to source raw fleeces from the Pacific Northwest and create custom wool blends. It is rewarding to support local farmers while crafting unique products for my business.
Fiber arts have become my passion, and I'm excited to share it with you through my hand-dyed wool and yarn. Each piece I create carries its own story, from the journey of the raw wool to the final dyeing process. I hope my work inspires your creativity to craft something amazing. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and happy making!
